STEM day 3

Our 3rd day of STEM and we have changed activities. We are exploring and learning that things don't always work out the way we expect. We are also learning that sometimes we need to do a little bit of research in order to make something successful. Knowledge is power!

Creating things for Matariki

This week we have been learning about Matariki.
This DLO (Digital Learning Object) is a photo of some photos where we made stars (whitu) out of colourful beads. We experimented with different patterns and colours.

What I enjoyed doing...
"Looking at my masterpiece when it was done" ~ Vaughn-Dean.
"Playing with the playdough. We used different tools to make it in to whatever we wanted." ~ Jade.
"I enjoyed watching everybody having fun when they were creating" ~ Twinkles.

What I found challenging...
"Placing the beads in the right place within the pattern because they kept falling out" ~ Lexus.
"Gluing the glitter on to the leaves because sometimes it was difficult to get the right amount of glue without making a mess" ~ Kairo.
"It was challenging cleaning up all the beads because they kept bouncing and falling on the ground" ~ Ocean-Lee.

What I might do differently next time is...
"Next time I might use the beads on the floor so they don't roll away" ~ Ocean-Lee.
" Make the star more colourful" ~ Lincoln.
"Next time I could use tweezers to help put the beads in to the right places" ~ Samicia.

Rangi & Papa

We went to see the glow in the dark puppet show Rangi & Papa the story of Matariki. What an amazingly entertaining production! We were so impressed by the talent of the puppeteers and the artists who made the puppets. I think some of the room 1 tamariki are inspired to make their own puppets.

Exploration through S.T.E.M: week 2.

This week Mrs Wallace was on release so room 1 did STEM with Mr. Tim.
We had some new extension parts arrive for the Edison Robots, so were able to add on to the robots and turn them into tanks, diggers and claws.
We also have been getting in to coding.
Here are some of the highlights.

Exploration through S.T.E.M

It was our first day exploring through S.T.E.M. There was a lot of failure, perseverance, success and FUN!!! We are really trying hard to learn about being resilient. It is ok to try something and not have it work out. Just keep at it until you are successful. We are looking forward to trying again next Friday.

Brain Gym

It was raining during brain-break today, so we decided to have Brain Gym for our break instead. Keeping our bodies moving, and having a little rest for our brain was fun. Some of the moves were trickier than others, but we persevered.

Maths Problem solving: Term 2 Week 3

Solve both of these mathematical problems.
Remember to show/explain how you worked the answers out by writing it as a comment on this post.
Title them as Problem 1 and Problem 2.
